Issue#160840: Linux - [SOLVED] using ECC RAM

  • Hi,

The mainboard of my system is capable of using ECC DIMMs, but currently non-ECC modules are installed & they work fine so far.

I'm considering to replace the current non-ECC RAM with ECC ones. I'd like to ask :
    1. Does it require changing BIOS settings or kernel support etc. ?
    2. What are the practical advantages of ECC over non-ECC ?
Looking forward to advices. Thanks in advance.

I did the first time, but i selected too many options and got a software error. second time around i rushed.. I am now hard wired, but before i did that, i mounted the dvd and installed the Network-Manager-wifi* with the rpm command. lspci shows my card, but nmtui only shows me the ethernet card and 'bridge' the gui network manager does not give me the option to add wifi. I am currently doing 'yum update' and will keep at it, but maybe someone can point me in the right direction. thanks UPDATE: after tinkering and doing a reboot, wifi option is there, and it automatically connected. • Issue#1062214: Linux - [SOLVED] SAMBA PDC Windows XP Roaming Profile Issue [SOLVED]

I wanted to post this in case someone else has this problem. Samba PDC with multiple workstations (2000, XP, 7). The only remaining XP user was having an issue with their roaming profile being unable to be saved to the server and when they would log back in, it wouldn't be able to find their local profile. This was a new problem that suddenly appeared out of no where after the system had been working fine for literally years. Turns out the user was watching the Olympics online. Adobe Flash was creating a drm folder with an "=" in the folder name. I'm 99% sure Linux doesn't like that and this is where the problem occurred. The only solution was to log in and delete the offending folder. But what to do if it occurs again? I created a logoff script and added it to that machine via gpedit.msc. Make sure to add it to logoff scripts and not shutdown scripts. Shutdown happens too late for the script to be effective. Code: @ECHO OFF Set dir="%APPDATA%\Adobe\Flash Player\

  • Issue#1141606: [SOLVED] Setting Video RAM for an Updated VMWare 12.x Linux Guest

All -- Posting this in case it might be helpful for others. I moved an old VMWare Workstation 9.x Slackware Current Guest OS from an Old Laptop over to a New One with VMWare 12.1.1 In addition, I updated the Guest Version from 9.x to 12.1.1 over on the New Laptop. On the Old System, I was able to run VESA Mode 0x367 ( 1920 x 1080 x 32 ). I booted the newly copied Guest Image on my new Laptop and the LILO "Select a Video Mode" Dialog popped up. No problem, I knew I would need to reinstall VMWare Tools so I did that and rebooted. Still no joy. The best VESA Mode I could get was 1152 x 864 x 32 ( option z ). It was small and ugly and worse, my gpm mouse couldn't reach the edge of the screen. No matter what Options I set in the VMWare Host-Side GUI for the Slackware Current 64 Guest, I could not fix the VESA Mode. The solution was here: I needed to calculate how much VRAM I wanted and then add this NEW line to t

  • Issue#2291: Linux - [SOLVED] Going from Debian 8.2 to 8.3 -- How?

I have been running Debian for about a year and went through the distribution upgrade from wheezy to jessie 8.2. I have been doing weekly software updates using Code: sudo aptitude update sudo aptitude safe-upgrade Now that 8.3 has been announced (, is continued use of the above two commands sufficient to get me to 8.3? Or, do I need to do more ('apt-get upgrade' and 'apt-get dist-upgrade')? Is there a command to verify what 8.x version number I am at? I have been searching man pages and forums for some time for answers to these probably trivial questions but have not been able to find clear answers.

  • Issue#2316: Linux - [SOLVED] linphone on Debian Jessie, cannot register SIP account.

Hi all, I have recently installed linphone on my acer C720 chromebook running Debian Jessie, and purchased an SIP account from a voip provider. The first step towards using linphone is to use a wizard to enter username, password and domain name (+ optionally proxy). I am unable to complete this step. There is a button labelled <APPLY> in the bottom right hand corner of the dialogue which is not illuminated, although I have fully entered the username, password and domain name provided by my voip provider. I can't find any documentation relating to this problem or any evidence that other users have encountered it. That may imply that I am doing something completely wrong? Any help appreciated, or advice re: other suitable softphones for use with Debian Jessie. Thanks... Andrew.

  • Issue#2331: Linux - [SOLVED] Remote X no longer working on X server after upgrade to current

Hi, Prior to upgrading my desktop machine from 64-14.1 to 64-current last night I was able to open remote windows on the local screen. This no longer works. The local machine does still work as an X client, just not as an X server for remote windows. ssh was not used in any way, it even worked with telnet opening the initial connection so ssh is not the issue. netstat shows the local, upgraded, machine does not have port 6000 open even though defaultserverargs is empty. How to re-enable please?

  • Issue#2343: Linux - [SOLVED] Thunderbird & Outlook 365 - suddenly folder display broken on all accounts

This is about some major Thunderbird (or Outlook ) weirdness that started today....or at least that I noticed today. Everything used to be good. I could access all my Outlook 365 imap folders on Thunderbird (3 different Outlook accounts), it was sunny and warm and the birds were chirping outside. Suddenly, all of my Outlook folders - except for Inbox and Trash - disappeared, and my world came to halt. Maybe a bit dramatic, but I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem, maybe starting today? If not, I'd really appreciate any guidance on how to best troubleshoot. To be more specific, I have three unrelated Outlook 365 imap accounts, and a few other non-Outlook 365 imap (different services) accounts. All non-Outlook 365 imap accounts are continuing to work 100%. The Outlook 365 accounts, all of a sudden, stopped displaying any folders other than Inbox & Trash. When I click on subscribe, nothing is checked at all (not even Inbox). Checking any folders (even those displayed

  • Issue#2352: Linux - [SOLVED] HPGL, PS, and new printers

I have had a Samsung ML-2010P (mono laser) that has never worked in Linux, although I recently tested it on a windows (works fine). When I purchased it I mistakenly assumed that - being a laser printer - it would understand HPGL and PS. Instead it speaks some sort of third party language not understood by my Slackware box. I tried thismorning to install the "samsung-unified-driver" for Linux. The installation was a success but the driver is not apparently as universal as one might think. So still no printer. I was recently looking at HP laser printers and learned the model I could afford spoke that same third-party language or something similar. I cannot imagine a "Hewlitt Packard" printer not understanding "Hewltt Packard Graphic Language" or even PostScript. Even my 9 pin dot matrix printer in the very early '90s understood PS. Do the newer low end HP laser printers work in linux ? If they work in the GUI, will they work without GUI on a terminal (tt

  • Issue#27712: Linux - [SOLVED] Simple Backup Program

While there are many backup threads in this forum none address my concern. I would like a simple way (with a GUI- I don't use the command line because I am the worlds worst typist) to copy (bit for bit) my home directory to an external hard drive. What I do NOT want to do is what most backup programs insist on doing: put the data into a single directory or file that is not readable except with that program. I do not want to compress, encrypt, process, or otherwise alter the data in any way. I do not want to save disk space (disk space is almost free now and I have so much I will never fill it). I want the backed up directory to be exactly like and just as readable as the original directory bit for bit. I do not want the backup software skipping protected files, or hidden files, or any other kind of file or data in the directory. I do not want permissions to be an issue. What I am looking for is bit reading not file reading software. The closest I have found is disk imaging softwa
